BETWEEN HOTEL

The Between is an adaptive reuse boutique hotel that reimagines a historic industrial building in Madison as a continuous spatial experience shaped by transition and overlap. Rooted in the concept of luminality, circulation becomes the primary driver, with a central spine and perimeter loop that blur connection. Programming unfolds through layered zones, from a public ground floor of dining, lounge, and social spaces to an immersive second floor bathhouse and spa, and more private guest rooms above. These shifting levels create a gradient of experience of activity and retreat with collective and individual.

These conceptual studies explore The Between through ideas of liminality, threshold, and movement. Each diagram investigates how space can exist in a state of transition, where edges blur, paths overlap, and moments of pause become part of the journey. Through layered sketches, abstract models, and spatial collages, the project studies how light, material, and circulation can create a hotel experience shaped by both connection and separation. Rather than treating corridors and thresholds as secondary spaces, The Between uses them as active moments of discovery, guiding guests through shifting relationships between privacy, gathering, and atmosphere.
